Colouring Tutorial - Stephen Colbert.

A good time for another tutorial, this time featuring Mr. Stephen Colbert of Fake News fame. I discovered this mindblowingly easy and versitile colouring technique by accident, playing around with the default gradients that come with PSP 7. One gradient in particular was very useful. Have fun, Feedback is welcome. Feel free to share your icons and add this journal for updates.

Make sure you have your layer palette open!

1. Crop and resize your base from this image and resize it to 100x100 pixels. Do not adjust the sharpness.

2. Create a new raster layer and fill it with this gradient . Set the layer blend mode to saturation at 60% opacity.

We're only on the second step and look at the dramatic difference we've already achived with the colours. It's almost like a painting, no?

3. Duplicate your base layer and pull it on top of the gradient fill layer. Set the layer blend mode to screen at 80% opacity.

4. Dupilate the top base then change the layer blend mode to soft light at 100% opacity. Then desaturate this layer by clicking on colors > adjust > hue/saturation/lightness and use these settings:

Hue: 0
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

5. Create a new raster layer and fill it with #0A3758. Set the layer blend mode to exclusion at 80% opacity.

6. Duplicate your base and bring it to the top. Set the layer blend mode to soft light at 100% opacity.

And you're done!

Other icons made using the same technique, with only minor adjustments in the opacities and number of screen layers.

The graident I used in this tut is made up of primary colours (magenta, cyan and yellow) which is probably the reason why it can be used with a lot of different bases to brighten up the colours a bit.

Full Icon Tutorial - Review + Hugh Hue Maps For PSP.

Review of methods previously shared + using Hue Maps. Suited for users who are comfortable with PSP 7, but can be transferable.

Yes, I know I've included steps that I included in my first two tutorials, but I have yet to see a tutorial that shows off the glory that is the Hue Map. Infact, I don't think I've ever seen one icon made that involved Hue Maps. Maybe that's just me, but reguardless, it's time to unleash the fury of the Hue Map upon the icon world! I made this icon specificly for this tutorial. Feel free to snag it though, so long as I get some credt. Feedback is welcome. Feel free to add this journal for updates.

1. Crop your base from the screencap, (this one I got from stelladives) and resize it to 100x100 pixels.

2. (Here's the tricky part). Click on Colors > Adjust > Hue Map. See the 2 Hue Shift Bars that have 216 and 252 above them? Adjust BOTH bars until you see a 39 at the bottom. Leave everything else alone and click ok. Duplicate the layer. If you have NO idea what I'm talking about, here's a visual:

There it is. the Hue Map in all of it's Hugh ~~Laurie~~ Glory! Got it now? Easier than curves, isn't it? ^_^

3. Sharpen the TOP LAYER ONLY and then set the layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity. Duplicate the top layer 3 times. By now, your icon should have 5 layers, including the base.

4. Paste this gradient on top of your layers and set its layer blend mode to hue at 50% opacity.

5. Paste this gradient on top of your layers and set the layer blend mode to exclusion at 50% opacity. At this point, you should have 7 layers in total making up your icon.

6. Merge all of the layers into one. Duplicate the base and set that top layer's blend mode to soft light at 100% opacity.

7. Under the soft light layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #81CEFF . Set the layer blend mode to burn at 100% opacity. Duplicate the layer, but change this layers opacity to 75%.

8. Still under the soft light layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #E8C8A8 . Set the layer blend mode to burn at 50% opacity.

9. Still under the soft light layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #C0C0C0 . Set the layer blend mode to burn at 30% opacity.

10. On TOP of the soft light layer, paste this lighting texture (made by tihana) and set the layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity.

11. Merge all of the layers. Select the selection tool, right click on the tool bar and select the tool options pallette (if you don't already have it open.) Input these settings:

Selection Type: Rounded Square
Feather: 0

The Antialias box is checked.

Crop your entire icon, copy and paste it as a new image.

12. Resize your new image to 55x55 pixels. Then create a new 100x100 pixell document and fill it with #FFFFFF. Copy and paste your resized icon into the new one as a new layer. Select the mover tool and move your icon over a little to the left.

13. </a> Duplicate the top layer then click on Image > Mirror. Take the mover tool and move the mirrored layer over to the right. Merge all of the layers and then sharpen it.

And you're done!

Tutorial - Colouring with Gradiants with Dr. James E. Wilson.

For beginners and people who hate curves. (Or anyone, really.)

Here's a very simple but effective colouring technique I used on my Wilson Icons a few posts back. Even though I did use curves on that batch, it's not 100% nessasary to use them. You can create a similar effect by substituting a couple different gradiant layers in place of a curves adjustment layer. I know people don't like gradiants much either, but I don't think anyone will argue that they are less troublesome than curves. I created this icon specificly for this tutorial, so if you'd like to take it (as simple as it is), feel free too so long as I get some credit. Feedback is welcome. Feel free to add this journal for updates.

1. Crop your base from the screencap, (this one I got from stelladives) and resize it to 100x100. Duplicate the layer.

2. Sharpen the TOP LAYER ONLY and then set the layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity. Merge the two layers.

3. Paste this gradient as a new layer over your base and then set the layer blend mode to hue at 50% opacity. (The difference between step 2 and 3 is very subtle, I know. But trust me on this. You'll see soon enough.)

4. Duplicate the base layer and place it over the top layer. Then set the layer blend mode to burn at 20% opacity.

5. Paste this gradient as a new layer on top and set it's layer blend mode to exclusion at 33% opacity.

6. Duplicate the base layer once more and place it on top of the other layers. Set the layer blend mode to overlay at 40% opacity. You should have 5 layers at this point.

7. To add the border, merge all of the layers into one and resize your icon to 90x90 pixels. Sharpen the image. Then click on Image>Add Borders and input these settings:

Symmertic box is checked.
Top: 5
Bottom: 5
Left: 5
Right: 5

Make sure #FFFFFF is set as your background color if you want your border to be white.

And you're done!

I've used this method a few times on a variety of different icons, but this one seemed to really stand out. Feel free to change it up as you wish and share your icons! Feedback is welcome. Other icons like the one featured in this tutorial can be found here. (This is my very first tutorial by the way.)

1. Crop your base from the screencap, (this one I got from stelladives) and resize it to 100x100. Duplicate the layer.

2. Sharpen the TOP LAYER ONLY and then set the layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity. Duplicate the top layer 4 times. By now, your icon should have 6 layers, including the base.

3. Underneath the top layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #000040 . Set the layer blend mode to exclusion at 100% opacity. Duplicate that layer once. At this point, the icon should have 8 layers.

4. Merge all 8 layers together into one. Duplicate the layer and set the layer blend mode to soft light at 100% opacity. Create a new raster layer underneath the top and fill it with #A4DDF4 . Then set the layer blend mode to burn at 100% opacity. Duplicate the burn layer once, but lower its opacity to 75%. Duplicate the layer set at 75% 3 times. By now, you should have 7 layers making up your icon.

5. Create a new raster layer underneath the top layer and fill it with #EADCCD . Set the layer blend mode to burn at 100% opacity.

6. Create another new raster layer over the top layer and fill it with #E6E6E6 and set the layer blend mode to burn at 100% opacity.

7. Take this lighting texture (made by tihana) and paste it as a new layer. Set it's layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity. Repeat step 6.

And you're done!
