Full Icon Tutorial - Review + Hugh Hue Maps For PSP.
Made With PSP 7.

Before: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting After: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting.

Review of methods previously shared + using Hue Maps. Suited for users who are comfortable with PSP 7, but can be transferable.

Yes, I know I've included steps that I included in my first two tutorials, but I have yet to see a tutorial that shows off the glory that is the Hue Map. Infact, I don't think I've ever seen one icon made that involved Hue Maps. Maybe that's just me, but reguardless, it's time to unleash the fury of the Hue Map upon the icon world! I made this icon specificly for this tutorial. Feel free to snag it though, so long as I get some credt. Feedback is welcome. Feel free to add this journal for updates.

1. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Crop your base from the screencap, (this one I got from [info]stelladives) and resize it to 100x100 pixels.

2. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting (Here's the tricky part). Click on Colors > Adjust > Hue Map. See the 2 Hue Shift Bars that have 216 and 252 above them? Adjust BOTH bars until you see a 39 at the bottom. Leave everything else alone and click ok. Duplicate the layer. If you have NO idea what I'm talking about, here's a visual:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

There it is. the Hue Map in all of it's Hugh Laurie Glory! Got it now? Easier than curves, isn't it? ^_^

3. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Sharpen the TOP LAYER ONLY and then set the layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity. Duplicate the top layer 3 times. By now, your icon should have 5 layers, including the base.

4. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Paste this gradient Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting on top of your layers and set its layer blend mode to hue at 50% opacity.

5. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Paste this gradient Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting on top of your layers and set the layer blend mode to exclusion at 50% opacity. At this point, you should have 7 layers in total making up your icon.

6. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Merge all of the layers into one. Duplicate the base and set that top layer's blend mode to soft light at 100% opacity.

7. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Under the soft light layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #81CEFF Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting. Set the layer blend mode to burn at 100% opacity. Duplicate the layer, but change this layers opacity to 75%.

8. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Still under the soft light layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #E8C8A8 Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting. Set the layer blend mode to burn at 50% opacity.

9. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Still under the soft light layer, create a new raster layer and fill it with #C0C0C0 Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting. Set the layer blend mode to burn at 30% opacity.

10. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting On TOP of the soft light layer, paste this lighting texture (made by [info]tihana) Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting and set the layer blend mode to screen at 100% opacity.

11. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Merge all of the layers. Select the selection tool, right click on the tool bar and select the tool options pallette (if you don't already have it open.) Input these settings:

Selection Type: Rounded Square
Feather: 0

The Antialias box is checked.

Crop your entire icon, copy and paste it as a new image.

12. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Resize your new image to 55x55 pixels. Then create a new 100x100 pixell document and fill it with #FFFFFF. Copy and paste your resized icon into the new one as a new layer. Select the mover tool and move your icon over a little to the left.

13. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting</a> Duplicate the top layer then click on Image > Mirror. Take the mover tool and move the mirrored layer over to the right. Merge all of the layers and then sharpen it.

And you're done!

I love the end result. I'm having a hard time translating it to Photoshop though. :(

Yeah, I had a feeling translating to Photoshop might be a problem for some people.

Off the top of my head, the only way I can think of to achive a similar effect in Photoshop would be to crop the blue area and maybe... change the color from blue to yellow by colorizing it? It'll take a little while if you're not good with the freehand lasso tool.

I don't have PS on this computer, but I know for a fact that my school's PC's have Photoshop 7 on them. I might spend a lunch in one of the computer labs there and see if I can figure out a better method for Photoshop. I care about you guys, too! ^^

Brilliant tutorial! Will definately be trying it out, if I can translate everything clearly to Photoshop. But it shouldn't be too difficult. Thanks! *adds to mems*

You know, I know my way around PSP pretty well. But the Hue Map option is one that I just never got ... mostly because I never used it. Will definitely be trying out. Thanks! Nicely done.

I felt it was time for a good tut for PSP 7.

Your icon turned out pretty nicely as well! It's a bit on the sharp side, but the colouring effect suited the base well.

Thank you for sharing. :)

Doesn't really translate into PS well, but I managed to get this:

That's not a bad result at all!

I think the only thing I might have changed in that icon was the lighting texture. I think the one I used on Hugh was a bit too bright for your icon.

The coloring is nice, though. Good job! :)

Beautiful icon and great tutorial :)
I got the exact same result in PS CS, although I don't have a Hue Map.
I made a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and set the hue to -178. Then I added a layer mask and erased Hugh's face, so the background was yellow and Hugh's face had its normal colour.

I just thought I'd let you know it works in PS :)

Oh fantastic! I was worried that the Hue Map step might not translate well into PS.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, would you have the time to create a short suppliment for this tutorial for PS users? I'll give you nothing less than full credit. ^^

Sure, I'll do that :)

This replaces your steps 2 & 3 for PS users:

Click on Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Hue/Saturation. Set the Hue to -178 and click ok. Now the background is yellow and Hugh's face looks ugly turquoise.
Add a Layer mask and paint Hugh black. Now the background is still yellow, but Hugh looks normal.
Flatten your image. Duplicate your new base 4 times and set all layers to Screen at 100%.

That's because ps7 doesn't have a tool options pallete. PSP7 does.

Actually, it's not that bad! The text is fine, the lighting effect looks tasteful, it's just the colouring that needs a bit of work. I'm probably thinking that the exclusion layer is a bit too opque. Next time try to make it a bit more transparent, and perhaps use a balance/contrast adjustment layer.
